Search setup check

Check for public signs that a site is verified in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and that its sitemap can be found. ChatGPT search draws on Bing, so a site Bing was never told about is easy to miss.

What it cannot tell you

We only see public traces. Google’s HTML-file method, Bing’s DNS CNAME and Bing’s import from Search Console leave none, so “no sign” means look in your account, not “not set up”.

How it works

We look for the public traces that verification leaves: a google-site-verification TXT record in DNS or tag on the home page, an msvalidate.01 tag or a BingSiteAuth.xml file for Bing. Then we find your sitemap (from robots.txt, else /sitemap.xml) and count its pages.

Why it matters: ChatGPT’s web answers draw on OpenAI’s own crawl and on Bing’s index. On our own Cuescribe, Bing Webmaster Tools was set up by 12 Oct 2026; OpenAI’s search crawler read the whole site on 15 Oct, and ChatGPT fetches for people’s questions went from none to 49-88 a day that week. Makerfern got ChatGPT visitors before it was in Bing. So it is one site’s timing, not a rule, but both consoles are free.
